Elucidation of the neuronal underpinning of hierarchical navigation by measuring and manipulating the activity of place and grid cells

The goal of this research is to understand the neuronal underpinning of hierarchical navigation through the activity of hippocampal place cells and their relatives in the brain. By leveraging model organisms, including rats and mice, which can be used to measure and manipulate neural activity in the experimental room, we will deconstruct the behavioral diagrams based on external factors as well as internal conditions.

We will use the reconfigurable maze, which is an outcome of a previous project (Systems Science of Bio-Navigation 2016–2021), as a prototype, and develop it into an environmental χlogbot that incorporates automatic deformation and contact-free intervention, in cooperation with the A02 Cyber Team. We will develop a neurologger, also established in the previous project, which wirelessly monitors neuronal activity in the brain into a wearable logger. Then, we will elucidate the neural underpinnings of hierarchical navigation in natural environments, targeting seabirds and salmonids. Through collaboration with the A02 Cyber Team, using deep learning models including place and grid cells, we aim to achieve a comprehensive understanding of hierarchical navigation by constructing a cyber-physical system (CPS) that incorporates spatiotemporal causal inference and reinforcement learning.
